Yarn
The ghost in these photos is made with chenille/velvet bulky yarn. Any of these work beautifully:

Hook

Safety Eyes

Stuffing

Chenille yarn gives that soft, fluffy look you see in the photos. Bernat Blanket yarn, Velvet yarn by Lion Brand, or any #6 bulky chenille works well. The stitches are harder to see in chenille than in smooth yarn — if this is your first amigurumi, worsted weight is easier to learn with, then switch to chenille once you’re comfortable with the rounds.

Finished size: approximately 3 inches tall with worsted weight yarn.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

Check our crochet abbreviations guide.

  • MR — magic ring (magic circle tutorial)
  • sc — single crochet
  • inc — increase (2 sc in same stitch)
  • dec — invisible decrease
  • sl st — slip stitch
  • rnd — round
  • st(s) — stitch(es)

How to Make This Crochet Ghost Pattern Free – Step by Step

Work in continuous rounds. Do not join unless specified. Move stitch marker up each round.

Note: chenille yarn makes it harder to see your stitches and count rounds. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of each round and count before moving on. Don’t skip this — with velvet yarn it’s very easy to lose your place.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)

Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12)

Rnd 3: (sc, inc) × 6 (18)

Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) × 6 (24)

Rnd 5–9: sc in each st around (24) — 5 rounds

Insert safety eyes between Rnd 7 and 8, approximately 8 stitches apart. With chenille yarn the fabric is thicker — position the eyes a round lower than you would with smooth yarn so they sit in the right place on the face.

Rnd 10: (2 sc, dec) × 6 (18)

Begin stuffing now. Fill firmly but not so tight the shape distorts.

Rnd 11: (sc, dec) × 6 (12)

Finish stuffing.

Rnd 12: dec × 6 (6)

Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail. Thread tail through front loop of each remaining stitch, pull tight to close. Weave in end.

Ghost Skirt (the wavy bottom)

Join white yarn in any stitch of Rnd 12 — wait, we work the skirt from the outside of Rnd 9 (the widest round before decreasing).

With RS facing, join yarn in any stitch of Rnd 9.

Skirt Rnd 1: (sc, inc) × 12 (36)

Skirt Rnd 2: (sl st, ch 1, 3 dc in next st, ch 1, sl st) × 12

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

This creates the classic wavy ghost hem. No sewing required — it’s all crocheted in.

Finishing

Eyes: if you want to embroider instead of safety eyes, use black yarn and a tapestry needle. A simple French knot for each eye works well.

Mouth: optional. With black yarn, embroider a small curved line or 3 small stitches in a V shape between Rnd 8 and 9.

Weave all ends through the inside of the ghost before closing.

Variations of This Crochet Ghost Pattern Free

Ghost keychain — before closing Rnd 12, insert a keyring loop through the top. Close as normal. The keyring sits at the crown.

Ghost garland — make 8–10 ghosts, chain 100 stitches, and attach each ghost by threading the chain through the crown with a crochet hook and knotting. Space them evenly along the chain.

Chunky ghost — use super bulky yarn (#6) and a 6.0 mm hook. Finished size approximately 6 inches. Perfect for a statement Halloween decoration.

Witch hat ghost — crochet a tiny black cone hat (ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch, inc rounds until desired size, then straight rounds for the brim) and place on top. Secured with a small stitch or left removable.

Tips from one crocheter to another

Keep your tension consistent — amigurumi shows uneven stitches more than flat projects because the fabric curves. If you’re crocheting tighter than usual, go up half a hook size.

Stuff as you go from Rnd 10 onward. If you wait until the end the opening is too small and you’ll fight with the stuffing.

The invisible decrease makes a cleaner finish than a standard sc2tog. It’s worth learning for any amigurumi — insert hook through front loops only of next two stitches, yarn over, pull through both, yarn over, pull through remaining loops.

If the magic ring feels slippery while you work Rnd 1, hold the tail firmly against the ring with your thumb until at least 4 stitches are complete.

Project Ideas

Halloween mantel decor — make 3 ghosts in different sizes (change hook size, same pattern) and arrange with small pumpkins.

Party favors — stuff with a small treat instead of polyfill and close with a slip stitch through Rnd 12. Hand them out as Halloween party gifts.

Car charm — attach to a keyring with a short chain. The ghost swings as you drive. Classic.

Gift topper — tie around a Halloween gift bag handle with ribbon.

FAQs

Is this pattern suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. This crochet ghost pattern free uses only single crochet and basic increases — if you know how to work in the round, you’re ready.

What yarn works best?
Smooth acrylic worsted weight gives the cleanest stitch definition. Velvet or chenille yarn gives a fluffier, softer look but can be harder to see your stitches — not ideal for beginners.

Can I use a different hook size?
Yes — use whatever gives you a tight enough fabric that stuffing doesn’t show through. Generally 0.5–1 mm smaller than what the yarn label recommends.

How do I make it bigger?
Use a heavier yarn and larger hook. The rounds stay exactly the same — the finished size scales with the yarn weight.

Can I sell finished ghosts made from this pattern?
Yes. Please credit Patterns Here as the pattern source when posting online.

How long does one crochet ghost pattern free take?
About 45 minutes for the first one. By the third you’ll be making them in 25–30 minutes.
